How to Say ‘Shall I…’ in Korean?

This pattern is used when attempting to help someone and corresponds to ‘Shall I’, ‘Allow me’, or ‘I will’ in English. When the person receiving the help is of higher status than the speaker, -아/어 드릴게요 or -아/어 드릴까요? is used.

When the verb stem ends in ㅏ or ㅗ (아 어 야)， -아 줄게요/줄까요? is used. Otherwise -어 줄게요/줄까요? is used. For verbs that end in 하다， the form changes to -해 줄게요/줄까요.

Example:

우산이 두 개 있는데 빌려 줄까요? I have two umbrellas, so shall I lend you one?

제가 도와 드릴게요. Let me help you with that.

선생님, 제가 들어 드릴까요? Teacher, shall I help you carry it?

What is the difference between -(으) 세요 and -아 /어 주세요?

-(으) 세요 is a simple command or request to the listener to do an action for the listener's sake.

Example:

이 옷이 민우 씨에게 안 어울려요 다른 옷으로 바꾸세요

These clothes do not look good, Minu. Please change them with something else.

(For the sake of you, Minu.)

다리가 아프세요? 여기 앉으세요. Does your foot hurt? Please sit down here.

(For the sake of the listener.)

-아 /어 주세요 is a request to the listener to do an action for the sake of the speaker.

Example:

이 옷이 저에게 안 어울려요. 다른 옷으로 바꿔 주세요.

These clothes do not look good on me. Please change them with something else.

(For my sake.)

영화가 안 보여요. 앉아 주세요. I can’t see the screen. Please sit down (For my sake.)
