The present tense of the formal polite style in Korean is made by adding -(스) 닙니다 to the word stem of adjectives or verbs. It is used mainly in formal or public situations such as in the military, news broadcasts, presentations, meetings, and lectures.
Example 1:
A: 이것을 어떻 게 생각합니까?
B: 좋습니다.
A: What’s your opinion of this?
B: I think it’s good.
If the word stem ends in vowel, its declarative form is -ㅂ니다 and its interrogative form is -ㅂ니까, for example:
가다 (to go) -> 가
가 +ㅂ니다 -> 갑니다 (declarative)
가 +ㅂ니까 -> 갑니까 (interrogative)
오다 (to come) -> 오
오 +ㅂ니다 -> 옵니다 (declarative)
오 +ㅂ니까 -> 옵니까 (interrogative)
If the word stem ends in consonant, its declarative form is -습니다 and its interrogative form is -습니까, for example:
먹다 (to eat) -> 먹
먹 + 습니다 -> 먹습니다 (declarative)
먹 + 습니까 -> 먹습니까 (interrogative)
앉다 (to sit) -> 앉
앉 + 습니다 -> 앉습니다 (declarative)
앉 + 습니까 -> 앉습니까 (interrogative)
-(스) 닙니다 has its informal polite form as 아/어요.Korean Present Tense Verbs/Adjectives -(스)ㅂ니다
